This piece was inspired by colleagues at Cambridge who played the bassoon and the flute - at the time I had dreams of starting a chamber music group (which did not of course come to anything). Its chief influence is clearly Ravel's Trio in A minor, and I'm pleased that in places I managed to emulate in miniature his wave-like musical climaxes.
This piece is dedicated with love to my mother, who for her 70th birthday requested a present that was hand-made.
