I wrote this when I was a teenager. The initial inspiration was a graphic on BBC television for the Young Musician of the Year competition, which consisted of a stave with the first six notes of the first movement. I transcribed them and wondered where the tune would go next. The result was this light-hearted sonatina in which the initial themes of each movement are all based on the notes of the major triad. The four movements follow the structure of a classic Beethoven sonata (I was playing a lot of Beethoven at the time) but I tried to do a few things that he didn't.
